The Great River Energy Mississippi River Challenge is a one- or two-day event, July 26 & 27, 2008, to raise awareness of the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities. There are several options for participants:
You can participate by bicycle on the many beautiful trails in the river gorge, or by paddling your canoe or kayak and exploring the Cities from the perspective of the River. All participants pay a registration fee and are asked to raise pledges for river protection…and earn spectacular premiums for your efforts. All food and beverages for the weekend, safety and sag support, shuttles, interpretive highlights, live music and camping at Fort Snelling are included in the participant registration fee. Come experience and protect this amazing river!
Each year, The Great River Rumble is put on by Midwest River Expeditions, Inc. a non-profit organization, dedicated to helping people enjoy the rivers and promote environmental consciousness. This year the 7-day trip goes from Menomonie, WI to LaCrosse, WI.
For the last few years, Paul Scanlon has done one-day paddles of 75-80 miles to raise more than $10,000 for the Red Cross. Below is a full report by Paul on his long day paddle on the Root River in 2006.
